History

Delaware is home to Ohio Wesleyan University and the birthplace of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States. Hayes met his wife, Lucy Webb, when she was one of the first female students at Ohio Wesleyan.

Each September, Delaware County celebrates its agricultural heritage with the Delaware County Fair, which also features family entertainment and world-famous harness racing. The internationally renowned Little Brown Jug, one of the jewels in the triple crown of Grand Circuit harness racing, draws over 45,000 spectators. The Little Brown Jug has the uniqueness of being the only such race of its caliber to still take place at a county fair.

Rich in heritage, Delaware County has many buildings and areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Historic Downtown Delaware. Downtown Delaware has been designated a Preserve America Community by the White House, a Best Hometown by Ohio Magazine , and also has the distinction of being a Main Street community.

Visitors can enjoy a self-guided walking tour of Sandusky and Winter Streets, using brochures prepared by the Delaware County Historical Society . Walking tour brochures are available at the Historical Society and the Delaware County Tourism Bureau.

The Old Towne Hall and Myers Inn in Sunbury are also on the National Register of Historic Places. Both are located on Sunbury's quaint village square. A majestic statue of Civil War General William Stark Rosecrans who hailed from Sunbury also adorns the village square. For a heritage exploration of the Sunbury, tour booklets can be borrowed from the Myers Inn Museum.
